The Inner World You’d Love to Live In

The Inner World

Why not create the inner world that you would love to live in? “Why would I want to,” you ask,  “when it is the real world that I want to create, control, and make comfortable.” That’s a typical example of the current western culture’s way of thinking. Most people don’t give their inner worlds a thought. They are focused on the material world while the world of the spirit is largely forgotten.

The Inner World Holds the Key

And yet, it is the inner world of the spirit that holds the key to a successful and fulfilling life. It is just this lack of understanding as to how we operate that makes for a life-long trail of failure and disappointment.  Our life starts on the inside. As we are about to discover, we either fail or succeed in our minds.

“Different Strokes for Different Folks”

You may not be old enough to recognize that quote or to have watched the television sitcom.  But it is an apt way to state the fact that different temperaments value the inner world in different ways.

We have learned that God has made us with differences and similarities that are discernible as temperaments, each reflecting some aspect of the image of God in whose image we are created. The temperaments struggle with this inner/outer tension in different ways.

SPs and SJs

The SPs and SJs gather their information from the world primarily by using their five senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. There isn’t anything wrong with this since God created them that way; but the use of our strengths often presents us with challenges. How do we focus on the spiritual world while we are focused on the material world? How do we live in the world of our senses and in the inner world of our minds? “Can we?”  we may ask.

NTs and NFs

The NTs and the NFs are more focused on their inner worlds because they gather their information from the world around them primarily with a prominent antenna called intuition that gathers much of its information from the nonmaterial world (instead of using only their five senses).  This is information the five senses can’t detect. The NFs sense a disconnectedness with the real world at times.

SPs and SJs Are More Challenged with Their Inner World

So the SPs and the SJs have a greater challenge. They use their minds just like those with greater intuition. However, they find it harder to focus on the inner world of their minds as do the NTs and NFs.

The Link Between Our Inner and Outer Worlds

In a scientific culture, which has for so long been dominated by the presupposition that there is only matter, it seems that the outer world is all that matters. It is not. And the link between the physical and non-physical worlds is the unfolding story of Part One of this segment of our series on the mind.
