Repentance Is the Mental Activity of Changing Our Minds

Changing Our Minds

Repentance — changing our minds to the extent that our lives are positively changed — is a basic principle for mental power.  We hear a lot about positive and negative thinking.  The reason they are powerful concepts in building our lives is because God thinks positively —always; and the devil thinks negatively.  Negative thinking develops fear, doubt and despair.  It’s not hard to believe in positive thinking when we realize it’s God’s way of thinking.

Deprogramming and Reprogramming Our Minds

The Bible speaks of this deprogramming and reprogramming in these words.  Negative thinking, it tells us, is sin (sin means actions that fall short of the mark).

“But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith (positive) is sin.”

We are to be made new in the attitudes of our minds, it instructs,

“… and be renewed in the spirit (attitudes) of your mind…”

Our minds are the venue of this renewal, it claims.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may approve what is that good and acceptable and the perfect will of God.”

Negative thinking influences us from childhood.  Here are some not-so-obvious ways.

  • We tell our children they can’t; and their pliable imaginations learn not to be so bold.
  • People laugh at them and tell them they can’t reach their dreams until, as adults, they succumb to the taunt and believe they can’t better themselves.

Imagine the contradiction: people made in God’s image, thinking they can’t be better than what they are.

Our Success Depends on Changing Our Minds

As adults we come to believe that we don’t have the money, the education, the skills, the brains to be exceptional – or the spiritual power to overcome.  And this negative (read “sinful, carnal”) mind soon infects all our attitudes:

“Are you whimpering when you could be whistling?

Crying when you could be rejoicing,

Defeated and depressed by your problems,

Frustrated because nothing seems to work,

Bored with life, tired of living, lacking zest, zeal and vigor;

Watching others make a great success of opportunities,

While you can’t make anything of anything.

Shrinking when you could be growing,

Failing when you could be recording victories,

Always having to say, ‘I’m going to get there someday?’”

Then you need your mind renewed.

Resources to Help You:

Who Am I?

Our first and most important task in a world-changing mission is to learn how to think straight (and teach straight thinking) and combat the insurgence of crooked thinking in our culture and in our world today. If we become passive victims of this crooked way of thinking, we promote it. Furthermore, if we remain silent, we also give it credence. In Who Am I?the reader progresses from how we have become “crooked thinkers” to how to break out of this prison of the mind to become instruments of change for a better world.  We do this by recognizing from where we derive our value as humans. “Build a straight and powerful mind.” ~ Ray W. Lincoln
