Science is a human activity. Therefore, it suffers from the same limitations that plague limited, imperfect humans. We all know — all too well — we are limited and imperfect. Just listen to the news! Perhaps, it’s not its failures, as such, that initially disqualify science as the god of this age. More likely, the limitations of science are imposed by its self-appointed philosophy of scientific materialism/naturalism (i.e. there is nothing but matter) and its obvious limitations due to it being a human activity that is subject to error. The exclusion of all things non-material as causes and explanations of how nature works has caused science to close its eyes to the things that can’t be explained by matter alone.
Our “Age of Enlightenment” Ignores the Limitations of Science
However, failing the acceptance of an authority greater than humans, science tells us that in this age of “enlightenment” the only real place we can find truth is in the discoveries and beliefs of science. Even though this thinking is markedly incomplete, it has become widely accepted as factual guidance for life in this generation.
They Tell Us that Our Experiences “Deceive” Us
Facts, such as our common moment-by-moment experience of the world of our minds and the exploits of our human spirit (soul or psyche) make us feel we must believe we are indeed creatures that make our own decisions and are valuable self-consciousness persons. At least we act that way (including all scientists and those who claim to know better). Routinely, however, we are being told we have been deceived all along. Words like mind, soul, or psyche, and self-consciousness are just misnomers, they say.
“Science” Tells Us that We Are Robots
They explain to us that the way we sense who and what we are is merely our brain making us “feel” this. In reality, this “explanation” is spurious. This “scientific explanation” states that it is merely some brain matter that chemically and electromagnetically tricks us and makes us believe a lie about ourselves. It says we are actually robots. And it’s not us but our brain that tells us what to wear and eat and how to act. If we are “intelligent,” we are told, we will recognize that we are at the whim of matter’s impersonal happenings — robots in the true sense of the word.
One of the Limitations of Science Is Their Reliance on Assumptions
And all this is because science assumes how we are made, reducing us to some impersonal machine. In fact, that’s even what some scientists, without blinking, have called us: machines. Are we nothing but a machine? A robot? Impersonal and controlled? Most of us sense there’s something wrong or missing with this explanation. And especially noteworthy is the fact that all those who try to make us believe this live each day thinking and feeling just like we do: as though what they believe is not all there is to life. That alone should flag us of foul tinkering with our minds.
Limitations of Science Are Due to Its Reliance on Fallible Human Intelligence
They also offer to us as guidance for life’s journeys the fallible human intelligence of some humans who think they know better and yet still act, think, and feel like us every hour of the day. But when we look at all that is happening in our world — the killing of people, greed for power, failed ideas of what is truly best for us — we can be excused for thinking we are more than robotic machines and responsible for our choices. Fallible humans are not the best guides to a life of happiness, peace, and fulfillment. These inadequate assumptions about us are being accepted without a twinge of doubt in our educational systems and all avenues and institutions that seek to shape and control our minds and lives.
The Truth that the Limitations of Science Ignore
The mind is an amazing gift to all of us — a mind that thinks and feels with freedom of personal choice. We are, in the fullest sense, valuable persons and much more than just the mindless matter of the universe. And we sense that is who we are, too.
But there is something going on that we need to not forget. Next: This we must teach our children. We want the best for them.
In my new book Who Am I?, I describe how we have become “crooked thinkers” and how to break out of this prison of the mind to become instruments of change for a better world by recognizing the source of our value as humans.
