One Thought At A Time!

One Thought At a Time

Just like we can’t walk in two directions at one time, we can’t think two thoughts at once.  However, we can think 2500 thoughts per minute.  Our brain is a very fast processor — faster than our consciousness can register.  That’s why when faced with a charging tiger we can make multiple decisions and send multiple messages to our body in a split second.  Thank God!  This brings us to “Principle Six:  We can think only one thought at a time.”

Double-Mindedness Fights the Brain’s Purpose

Can you see why double-mindedness (trying to think in two directions at once) and the indecisiveness it creates causes ineffectiveness?  Our focus is constantly being changed and we lose direction.  The purpose written into the brain’s design is to take us with meaning and purpose to a goal so that we can act with confidence.  Also note: Single-mindedness, not double-mindedness, creates the power of uninterrupted momentum.

The Key to Faith Is “One Thought”

The key to faith is to think one thought and hold it in the center of our consciousness.  This developed skill is what separates the ordinary achievers from the extraordinary achievers.

Logical Thinking Takes a Lot of Effort

Just like focusing on having faith burns up the brain’s energy fast, logical thinking takes a lot of brainpower too.  In fact, both require focus on the thoughts we are processing.  However, they are two different expressions of focus.

  1. Faith requires a steady focus that repeats a thought over and over, increasing its hold on us.
  2. Logic requires we move from one thought to its logical consequence without losing the rational connections, while at the same time developing its meaning.

How long can you remain focused on your goals?  For minutes? Hours? Days? Or months?  I have heard it said that Tiger Woods’ success is due to his superior ability to focus and concentrate.  That makes neurological sense.

A Focus on One Thought Produces Strength

We find this fact reflected in such statements as:

  • “Whatever you find to do, do it with all your might.”
  • “Be all there.”
  • “Concentrate.”

Focus on one God-empowered thought at a time until it has empowered you, and you will become very strong!

What About All the “Other Thoughts”?

In learning to think one thought at a time it may help to remember that we can’t stop thoughts entering our minds. However, we can control what we focus on.  Don’t be concerned about other thoughts that pop up into your consciousness.  Dismiss them! Just concentrate on what you want to focus on.  And give no nurture to the others.

Who Am I?

Our first and most important task in a world-changing mission is to learn how to think straight (and teach straight thinking) and combat the insurgence of crooked thinking in our culture and in our world today. If we become passive victims of this crooked way of thinking, we promote it. Furthermore, if we remain silent, we also give it credence. In Who Am I?the reader progresses from how we have become “crooked thinkers” to how to break out of this prison of the mind to become instruments of change for a better world.  We do this by recognizing from where we derive our value as humans. “Build a straight and powerful mind.” ~ Ray W.
